Spring Preview: High Temperatures Reach 70 Degrees – Why It’s so Hot and How Long It Will Last

A spring preview will occur on Thursday. High temperatures are coming and we could reach 70 degrees. Here’s why it will be so hot and how long it will last.

Temperatures in the 70s in March are not common, but they do happen. We typically see steady readings in the 70s as we reach Mother’s Day and beyond.

The reason for this warming is what is known as the Bermuda High. These weather patterns often establish themselves in the summer and can cause heat waves.

The heat is due to the position of the high pressure area. Park near Bermuda, off the east coast. This brings with it a warm southwest wind. This will help raise our temperatures to about 20 degrees above average.

How long will it last?

Like most spring warm-ups, the mild temperatures are short-lived. That will also be the case this time. Look for readings to return to the 50s and 60s for Friday and the weekend, and by Tuesday we will be back in the 40s.

So on Thursday go outside. You won’t feel alone. The parks and streets will be full of people.

Look for the bees and flies to also come out in the warmer weather. Some of the cherry blossoms will also come out. New York City has magnificent cherry blossom trees in the botanical gardens of The Bronx and Brooklyn.

However, please note that Thursday is not a beach day. Temperatures along the ocean will be much colder than in the parks. Readings directly on the sand will probably only be 50 degrees due to the cold ocean water this time of year. So make plans to get outside and enjoy at least one day of spring preview.

Are the 70 degrees in March due to climate change?

Often when it is warm in winter or spring, many people wonder if the increase in temperatures is due to climate change. Many people also have trouble enjoying the brief respite from the cold because they are worried about climate change.

Our climate is getting warmer. Our winters are shorter. Our springs come earlier. However, a brief heat wave is not climate change. It is the weather.

Climate is measured in decades, not days. The 70 degree days in March are more likely due to climate change, but are not a direct result. Warm days happen. Thursday’s record temperature is 76 degrees. It was set in 1946.
