Russia’s Role in the Israel-Palestine Conflict: Analysis and Updates

While a bloody war broke out between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas, the leader of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas is going to Moscow. However, according to analysts, Russia is staying out of the conflict in the Middle East for now because it is benefiting from the fact that the eyes of the whole world have temporarily stopped focusing on their invasion of Ukraine.

A Palestinian delegation should arrive in Moscow in the near future. The leader of the autonomous region there, Mahmoud Abbas, should meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the highest level. “We are just waiting for official confirmation from the Kremlin when exactly the meeting will take place,” said the ambassador of Palestine in Moscow, Abdel Hafiz Nogal, to the Russian state agency on Monday RBK.

But the ambassador mentioned that, according to him, at the moment it is not time to negotiate about the state arrangement of Palestine and Israel. He also declined to say how many Israelis are now being held captive by the terrorist organization Hamas, because he said no one could know.

On Saturday, October 7, Hamas launched a massive attack on Israel and has killed hundreds of people so far in terrorist attacks. In response, Israel launched a total blockade of the two-million-strong Gaza Strip, which the Israeli army has cut off from water, electricity and supplies, and is bombing it.

The Palestinian ambassador, who is negotiating a visit to Moscow, mentioned that Putin is in daily contact with the leadership of Palestine. The last time Vladimir Putin met with Palestinian leader Abbas was a year ago on the sidelines of a summit in Kazakhstan. Abbas last visited the capital Moscow in 2021.

Russia has not yet commented much on the conflict in the Middle East. The state, which itself has been leading the invasion of Ukraine since last year, only condemned the violence on both sides in a statement. The head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, then accused US policy of escalating the conflict, while former president Dmitry Medvedev and a well-known spokesman for the hard line of Putin’s propaganda wrote that the attack by Hamas “was to be expected” and was the result of Western support for Ukraine and the supply of weapons to the attacked country.

Web analysts Politico however, they warn that the conflict in the Middle East can play into Putin’s hands, because the eyes of the whole world have now completely turned away from his invasion of Ukraine. “It was the best gift for Putin for his 71st birthday, which he celebrated at the time of the Palestinian attack. An attack against Israel will distract the world’s attention also due to the fact that the USA is always completely absorbed in what is happening in Israel,” an unnamed high-ranking European Union diplomat told the website.

International observers also point out that the leadership of Hamas has also traveled to Moscow before, and its members even held talks with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Nevertheless, according to the diplomats, Russia is probably not behind the arming or the financial support of the terrorists, according to them, their ally Iran plays a bigger role here.
