Quebec Mayors Call for Change in Hostile Political Climate

The mayor of Saguenay, Julie Dufour, believes, like the resigning mayor of Gatineau, France Bélisle, that the political climate must change.

In her speech Thursday morning to announce her departure for health reasons, France Bélisle mentioned that municipal elected officials in Quebec must increasingly face problems, many of which are linked to interpersonal relationships. It targeted intimidation and tensions between elected officials in addition to media treatment.

I wondered a lot about the price to pay to accomplish this demanding work in a context, let’s say it, which is often hostile. I am leaving my position, among other things, to preserve my health, because political life is taking a toll on us, said the mayor of Gatineau during her press briefing.

In a message published mid-afternoon on Facebook, Julie Dufour said she was proud of the courage shown by her counterpart.

Municipal politics can be an unforgiving environment, where personal sacrifices are numerous and integrity is constantly questioned, the mayor wrote.

Recently, Julie Dufour said she was the victim of intimidation by advisor Jean-Marc Crevier, who made a derogatory comment in a group conversion on Messenger when he believed he was only addressing a few advisors and not the entire municipal council.

You are a leading figure in our common fight for a healthy and respectful political environment. I agree with you, that needs to change, she added.

Andrée Laforest targets advice

On the X platform, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Member of Parliament for Chicoutimi, Andrée Laforest, indicated that an unhealthy climate in a municipal council must not be tolerated.

She added that her government has already made several tools available to elected officials.

Our government is doing its part to support elected officials in their duties. That said, it is important that certain changes take place from within the councils with a sincere desire and for the benefit of citizens, she continued.
