“Our army will be strengthened with a large number of Abrams tanks, which are the most modern in the world,” Jaroslav Kaczynski, the deputy prime minister and leader of the ruling national conservative party Law and Justice, told reporters.
“If everything goes smoothly, deliveries will start next year,” he added.
The Ministry of Defense stated that 250 “M1A2 SEPv3” tanks had been ordered.
The United States and Poland signed a defense cooperation agreement last year, and Washington has indicated that, in addition to the 4,500 US troops already stationed in Poland, another 1,000 will be deployed on a rotating basis in the Eastern European country.
These steps are part of a wider NATO response to Russia’s 2014 invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent occupation and annexation of Crimea, as well as the destabilization of Donbass.
