PlayStation 5 Console Prototype for Sale – Rare Collector’s Item with a Starting Price of 800,000 Japanese Yen

Remember that weird looking box with a few ports and lots of diodes? Yes I think PlayStation 5 console prototype, which circulated frequently on the Internet even before the presentation of the final look. Now someone tried to sell one such prototype in a Japanese auction at Yahoo. Unfortunately for Europeans and Brits, Japanese Yahoo is not available.

It’s not common for very early version devkits to go on sale. Under very strict conditions, developers receive them in order to familiarize themselves in advance with the architecture and capabilities of the next generation console and to be able to develop their games. So she answered to that starting price 800,000 Japanese yen, which translates to over 120,000 crowns.

The seller claims that He bought the prototype on eBay about a year ago and attached some photos so we can have a better look at the device. In the photos we can see up to six USB ports and indicators of various systems and network connection.

Even considering the price, it is not a toy to play with, but collector’s item, which only the biggest collectors can afford on their shelves. It is quite possible that the prototype is not functional. This is because modern devkits are time-locked and the console must be regularly connected to the Internet to renew the license, which is a complex process requiring contact with Sony.

Unfortunately, I was unable to verify how the auction ended. Some sources say that 68 people were interested in the device and the price shot up to over a million Japanese yen. Somewhat strange are other auctions on Japanese Yahoo with the same photos. At one such auction, it ended up at 551,00 Japanese yen (CZK 82,800).
