PHOTO: Allies are starting to come to Latvia for international military training

Joint military exercises will provide an opportunity to enhance the interoperability of Allied military units during tactical operations, including demonstrating winter capability and intelligence capabilities, testing the capacity of the National Armed Forces infrastructure to receive incoming units and training air defense units.

The international military exercise “Saber Strike 22” led by the US Armed Forces Command in Europe will start on February 18 and will last until March 23. By February 18, about 400 U.S. troops and about 100 technical units, as well as 22 AH-64 Apache combat helicopters, will arrive on public roads with the convoy.

About 800 US troops and up to 250 military units will arrive from Lithuania on public roads by February 28.

The international military exercise “Crystal Arrow 22” organized by the Mechanized Infantry Brigade of the Land Forces of the National Armed Forces will also take place from February 28 to March 11. It is planned that a total of approximately 2,800 soldiers and land guards from Latvia and the United States, as well as 10 other countries, whose units form the NATO Expanded Battlegroup in Latvia – Canada, Albania, the Czech Republic, Italy, Iceland, Montenegro, Poland, will take part in the two exercises. Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. More than 300 ground and air force units will also be involved.

As part of the training of the US Air Force in Europe, an air tanker “KC-135” will stay in each of the Baltic countries in March to conduct joint training with the US Air Force fighters “F-15” stationed in Estonia.

A series of military exercises are planned for May, when the US Special Forces, together with the Latvian Special Operations Command and the National Guard, will develop co-operation within the framework of the Trojan Footprint North exercise.

During the Swift Response exercise, the US, Latvian, Polish and Czech Armed Forces will train intelligence, support for Allied infiltration operations and anti-landing operations, involving more than 10 US Air Force units.

The military exercise “Defender Europe” will be organized to test the infrastructure capacity of the National Armed Forces to receive incoming units and to assess the NATO force integration unit in Latvia. For this purpose, more than 700 US soldiers and more than 20 US Army and Air Force military equipment units will stay in Latvia.

The Astral Knight exercise, scheduled for late May and early June, will focus on air operations training with the U.S. Air Force on combat aircraft and air defense systems.

The presence of the Allies in Latvia will demonstrate the combat readiness of NATO member states and strengthen the principles of NATO’s collective defense by promoting deterrence.

During the military exercises, flights of Latvian Armed Forces aircraft, including combat helicopters “AH-64 Apache”, will take place in Latvian airspace, as well as the movement of military equipment along Latvia’s main and regional roads. As part of the training preparations, the first flights and movements of military equipment started already on February 13.

The National Armed Forces call on the people of Latvia to treat with understanding the ongoing military exercises aimed at improving the national defense capabilities and strengthening regional security.

All training tasks are performed in accordance with the safety measures specified in Latvia to limit the spread of Covid-19.
