NY1 News Celebrates 20 Years: A Reflection on the Political Advancement of the Latino Community in NYC

NY1 News Celebrates 20th Anniversary, Reflects on Latino Political Advancement in NYC

This week, NY1 News is celebrating its 20th anniversary of being on the air. Over the past two decades, the news outlet has witnessed and documented the political advancement of the Latino community in New York City.

Juan Manuel Benítez, presenter of Pura Política, took the opportunity to review the past 20 years and highlight the significant changes that have occurred in institutional representation and the demographic makeup of the Latino community.

When NY1 News first started, the political landscape was primarily dominated by the Puerto Rican political class, which sought to expand its influence while also making room for other Hispanic communities. It was during this time that NY1 Noticias was born in 2003.

Shortly after the launch of NY1 Noticias, Fernando Ferrer, a former mayoral candidate and Bronx Borough President, made his second attempt to become New York’s first Latino mayor. Although he did not succeed, his generation continued to push for the development of a new batch of young activists who have left their mark on New York politics over the last two decades.

As veterans like state senator Olga Médez and councilwoman Margarita López were ending their political careers, new faces emerged, such as Melissa Mark-Viverito. In 2014, Mark-Viverito made history as the first Latina to preside over the City Council. Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez also maintained and grew her influence during this time.

The power and influence of the Dominican community also increased over the years. Politicians like Ydanis Rodríguez, who was a councilor at the time, now serves as the commissioner of Transportation. Adriano Espaillat, who started in the Assembly, moved on to the State Senate, and eventually became a member of Congress.

Other politicians who began their careers on the City Council, such as Ritchie Torres and Antonio Reynoso, have now taken on prominent roles as congressman for The Bronx and Brooklyn Borough President, respectively.

One notable change in the Latino political landscape has been the shift in identity and ideology. While the previous generation was more focused on ethnic interests, the new wave of Latino officials has shown a greater interest in establishing ideological ties, particularly to the left. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez serves as a prime example of this shift.

Although no Latino has yet reached the New York mayor’s office, the progress made by the Latino community over the last twenty years is evident. NY1 News continues to be a platform that highlights and celebrates the achievements of the Latino community in New York City.

As NY1 News marks its 20th anniversary, it remains committed to providing comprehensive coverage of the political advancements and changes within the Latino community, ensuring that their voices are heard and their stories are told.

What impact has the coverage of progressive Latina politicians by NY1 News had on the political activism and aspirations of the Latino community in NYC

Greater representation and inclusion.

Over the years, NY1 News has covered key moments in Latino political history, such as the election of the first Dominican-American council member and the first Mexican-American assembly member. As the Latino community in New York City has grown and diversified, so has their political influence. NY1 News has played a vital role in highlighting the stories and struggles of Latino politicians, giving them a platform to share their experiences and advocate for their communities.

In recent years, NY1 News has also covered the rise of progressive Latina politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Julia Salazar. These young leaders have captivated the nation with their progressive policies and fresh perspectives, inspiring a new wave of Latino political activism.
