Cancer patients could benefit from a groundbreaking discovery that reveals a ‘vital weak spot’ in the devastating disease, according to experts. Recent findings have established a previously unknown link between DNA and the effectiveness of immunotherapy, a type of treatment used to combat certain types of cancers. Scientists have made an exciting breakthrough that could potentially enhance the drug’s effectiveness. They have uncovered the significance of DNA in the ‘energy factories’ residing within tumors. Advancements in Cancer Treatment

Immunotherapy, an innovative cancer treatment that utilizes the body’s immune system, has emerged as a powerful tool in the fight against cancer. Typically applied in lung, cervical, head and neck, and liver cancers, it promotes the body’s recognition and attack of cancer cells. Immunotherapy can either be utilized as a standalone treatment or in combination with other therapies such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Professor Dr. Payam Gammage, Co-lead Author and Group Leader at the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Scotland Institute and the University of Glasgow, explained, “Cancer is a complex disease that challenges our immune system’s ability to identify and destroy cancer cells, as they may resemble healthy cells. Our research showed that tumors with the most mutated mitochondrial DNA exhibited heightened sensitivity to immunotherapy.”

This research breakthrough has allowed Cancer Research Horizons, the innovation arm of CRUK, to file patents for the technology underlying this discovery. These patents will pave the way for the development of novel treatments that disrupt the energy sources exploited by cancer cells to grow and spread.
