The Feeling that January Never Ends: Psychological and Mental Health Experts Explain

Written by: Yasmine Al-Sawy:

The feeling that January does not want to end has become the subject of ridicule by social media users, even though the month has only 31 days.

Psychological and mental health experts noticed this phenomenon, which has spread in many countries of the world, and identified a number of reasons behind this feeling, according to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”.

Why do we feel like January never ends?

“The financial condition, the cold weather, the long winter nights, the boring daily routine, the feeling of pressure at the beginning of a new year, and the desire to achieve achievements despite one’s fears of them, all of these feelings make us see that January is very long and never ending,” said psychologist Chalway Carmichael.

She added that the hormones responsible for mood and happiness are disrupted this month due to the lack of communication, going out with relatives and friends, attending happy events, and spending fun-filled vacations, and then the person feels bored, frustrated, and has long, miserable days and nights.

Dopamine is considered a hormone that appears in the areas of the brain responsible for happiness, satisfaction, and motivation, and affects mood, sleep, memory, attention, and the ability to learn. During this month, this hormone decreases, but it quickly increases if you spend more time with loved ones and close people or receive a gift. Have fun or eat delicious food, and then January becomes less depressing and tiring.

There is what is called seasonal depression, which is usually associated with cold nights, the absence of the sun for a long period, and a feeling of loneliness and isolation for several days.
