How to turn on Stolen Device Protection

Apple’s latest software update – 17.3 – includes a crucial feature called Stolen Device Protection. To enable this feature on your iPhone:

  1. Ensure your iPhone is running the latest operating system. To check, go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Access your settings and search for “Stolen Device Protection”. Tap on the option that appears.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to enable the feature.
  4. For iPhone models with Face ID, you need to tap on Face ID & Passcode and enter your passcode. For iPhone models with a Home button, tap on Touch ID & Passcode and provide your passcode.
  5. Scroll down to the Stolen Device Protection section and tap on Turn On Protection.
  6. If you don’t see the Stolen Device Protection section, you may have to set up Face ID or Touch ID first.

What does this new setting do?

Once Stolen Device Protection is activated, unauthorized access to your iPhone is significantly more difficult. You will need further authentication to access certain information, and certain actions will be prevented if you are not in a trusted location.

If your iPhone is not in a trusted location, you will need to authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID for the following actions:

  • Using passwords or passkeys saved in Keychain
  • Using payment methods saved in Safari (autofill)
  • Turning off Lost Mode
  • Erasing all content and settings
  • Applying for a new Apple Card
  • Viewing Apple Card virtual card number
  • Taking certain Apple Cash and Savings actions in Wallet
  • Using your iPhone to set up a new device (e.g., Quick Start)

To ensure your iPhone recognizes familiar locations, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations, and ensure it is enabled.

Is there any reason NOT to use Stolen Device Protection?

The only inconvenience of having this feature enabled is when you want to switch to a new iPhone. In that case, you will need to wait for an hour before making the change.

While Stolen Device Protection is not foolproof, it is a significant step to thwart this growing trend of device theft. While Apple works diligently to protect users, it is important to remain vigilant and continue to demand enhanced security measures.
