Neighbors thank you for health, for being together

Sunset Park was one of the neighborhoods most affected by the pandemic this year, in fact some neighbors are still recovering from the effects.

“My cousins lost her husband and many deaths. I got sick from the virus,” said a neighbor.

But even so, several neighbors have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Like Gladys Molina, who at 74 is grateful for her health.

“Giving thanks to God in the day, the night, for all the blessings received because I have received so many, more blessings than anything else. I have three grandchildren, my husband, a daughter that I had and she gave me three grandchildren,” Gladys explained.

And it is that this neighborhood suffered about 13 thousand people infected with Covid and more than 350 people lost their lives. However, this year nearly 99% of eligible people have been vaccinated against COVID.

The Mixteca organization played an important role in the recovery of the neighborhood through healing workshops and this Wednesday they gave 200 turkeys to families in need.

“The solidarity of the community, how they responded in this moment of crisis,” said Lorena Korousias, executive director, Mixteca.

Korousias, psychologist and Executive Director of Mixteca, tells us the advantages of giving thanks in the middle of a year with so many difficulties.

“Being grateful and being able to count those things that you have instead of those things that you lost is healing … Gratitude fills spaces of loneliness, sadness. When you can say, OK Sunset Park lost a lot but there is a group of High School children who do sandwiches, “Korousias added.

That is why some neighbors have more to be thankful for this Thanksgiving than to regret.

“May we thank God for being together, for health, for being breathing, for being in this wonderful world,” added Gladys.
