Mayor Eric Adams warned city residents to beware of so-called “lone wolves,” that is, individuals who carry out terrorist actions on their own, following the deadly attacks against Israel by Hamas.
During a press conference this Tuesday at City Hall with other officials, Adams said that law enforcement will monitor social media for threats against religious communities as fighting continues in Israel and Gaza.
He added that statements posted on social media platforms can exacerbate the problem, noting that “lone wolves” could be radicalized online.
When asked what New Yorkers should expect in relation to a “lone wolf attack,” NYPD Patrol Chief John Chell reiterated that since last Saturday the Police Department has shifted resources to communities and religious institutions and that they have held conversations with both Jewish and Muslim religious leaders.
The mayor also asked New Yorkers to be alert and notify authorities if they see anything they consider suspicious.
The New York FBI office, for its part, said in a statement Tuesday that it is increasing “its focus on potential threats” as fighting between Israel and Hamas continues. The agency urged residents to report anything suspicious to the FBI.

“We remain in constant contact with our federal, state and local partners, including the NYPD and our community partners. “While we do not have specific, credible intelligence that indicates a threat to our city, we encourage the public to remain vigilant,” the FBI said.
