Massive Fentanyl Seizure in the Bronx Linked to Child Care Center Tragedy

Authorities seized more than 40 pounds of fentanyl from an apartment in the Bronx, a few blocks from the child care center where this substance was also found and where the death of a one-year-old child due to contact with the drug was reported.

According to police, the suspect Juan Daniel Herrera Vargas was arrested on Tuesday with a briefcase full of fentanyl, outside the property located on Heath Avenue, in Kingsbridge Heights.

Earlier, according to the indictment, Herrera Vargas had been seen leaving the Kingsbridge Road subway station dragging a black and tan rolling suitcase.

When federal drug agents and NYPD officers approached, Herrera Vargas ran away, leaving the rolling suitcase behind. Inside were 13 brick-shaped, one-kilogram rectangular packages of suspected fentanyl, according to the indictment.
