Government council elections Bern 2022 | January 24, 2022
That’s two more than in the last election four years ago. Ten of them belong to larger parties, the rest smaller parties, or they are independent. Among them is Verena Lobsiger-Schmid from Interlaken and Paolo Tramacere Dalyan from Thun.

Two people are taking up the position in the Berne section of the new “Aufrecht Schweiz” movement, as the Berne State Chancellery announced on Monday. These are the Bernese teacher and cable car mechanic Joshua Baumann and the Ittiger management consultant Mark Steiner. “Aufrecht Schweiz” emerged from opponents of the measures against the corona pandemic. Like four years ago, the Pirate Party is running with two candidates, namely Jorgo Ananiadis from Ostermundigen and Pascal Fouquet from Toffen. Ananiadis ran for office four years ago. There are also the non-party Verena Lobsiger-Schmid from Interlaken, Paolo Tramacere Dalyan from Thun and Bruno Moser, who is running for the “people: party” this year. Moser has repeatedly run for all sorts of elections in recent years. Peter Gasser, whose candidacy was announced by the Parti Socialiste Autonomous (PSA) in October, is running for a new organization called “Ensemble socialiste” (ES) in the Bern Jura Grand Council. Gasser wants to challenge Pierre Alain Schnegg from the SVP for the seat of government reserved for the Bernese Jura.

The politicians who want to stay on the Bern government council are Evi Allemann and Christoph Ammann from the SP, Christine Häsler from the Greens, Philippe Müller from the FDP and Pierre Alain Schnegg and Christoph Neuhaus from the SVP.
The conservative parties SVP, FDP, EDU and Die Mitte are entering the elections with a four-way ticket. Astrid Bärtschi also figures on it from the middle. She is to hold the seat of the only resigning member of the government, that of the acting finance director Beatrice Simon (Die Mitte). The left-green alliance of SP and Greens is aiming for this seat with the candidacy of Biel Mayor Erich Fehr (SP) on a list of four with the three previous ones. The EPP and the Green Liberals are going to the elections together with Christine Grogg (EPP) and Casimir von Arx (GLP).

Does the bourgeois majority hold?
The big question in the government council elections at the end of March will be whether the conservatives can hold their majority in the canton government. Left-Green wants to regain this majority, which it lost in 2016 when Pierre Alain Schnegg was elected to the government council. That’s why the SP and the Greens are running with the bilingual Mayor of Biel, Fehr.
In the spring 2018 elections, the candidates of the governing parties won between 75,785 and 126,207 votes. The other eight candidates followed with between 3,203 and 51,051 votes. It is therefore difficult for members of medium-sized or small parties or for non-party members to make it into the cantonal government.
