Rumors previously expressed in the press that the Continental Hockey League (KHL) team Helsinki “Jokerit”, in whose ranks Kalnins plays, want to withdraw from the “play-off” are false, the person in charge of working with international partners Roman Ribakov told the RIA Novosti news agency. .
On Saturday, the Russian news portal “Chempionat.ru” reported that “Jokerit” has decided to withdraw from the playoffs due to the rapid spread of the Covid-19 virus, although the club reached the second round.
In a conversation with the agency “RIA Novosti” Ribakov revealed that this information is not true.
“No such decision has been made within the team,” Ribakov told in a telephone conversation with RIA Novosti. “Should anything be accepted, KHL would be informed in an official letter. The team does not intend to withdraw from the playoffs.”
“Such a decision can be taken by the club in agreement with the league. The ban on participation in KHL playoffs can also be imposed by the Finnish government. It follows that such a decision can in principle only be taken by KHL or the Finnish government. We work closely with all parties involved.”
A few hours later, the Finnish government decided to ban Jokerit from going to St. Petersburg, where the second round games would have to take place.
“After long negotiations with the club’s doctors, players and staff, we have decided to opt out of the second round of the match,” the team said in a statement. “The decision was made on the basis of recommendations from the Finnish government as well as health authorities, which will not increase the risk of transmission or infection of the virus.”
In the first round of the playoffs, the Jokerit team won Yaroslavl’s Lokomotiv 4-2 in a series of up to four victories, but in the second round, the strong St. Petersburg SKA would oppose it. With the withdrawal of “Jokerit” in the final of the SKA Western Conference, the winner of the Moscow CSKA and the duel of the same city “Dinamo” will face.
