Indika: A Story Adventure Game Explores Sin, Sorrow, and Dilemmas in 19th Century Russia

Today we have the opportunity to get acquainted with the story adventure game Indicate, which takes us to an alternative version of Russia in the 19th century. The main character is a nun named Indika and the play deals with sins, sorrow and moral dilemmas. Overall, it is meant to go beyond the traditional framework of video games and it is closer to art films.

Indika will be played from a third-person perspective, combining exploration with environmental puzzles and a bit of platforming. Indika is expelled from the monastery and goes out into the world. Along the way, he has to learn many sides of good and evil and deal with themes such as grief, sin and dilemmas of conscience.

The play is intended to criticize the Russian Orthodox Church and point to Russia’s problems. It is supposed to touch on a topic that is better not to talk about in Russia.

“Even before our country entered the war, we touched on topics in the game that could lead to criminal prosecution in Russia. After February 24, the situation became even more complicated. Staying in Russia became physically terrible, but especially morally difficult. We therefore decided to leave,” Dmitry Svetlow, head of development and founder of the Odd Meter studio, revealed.

“Many of the problems of today’s Russia have their roots in the socio-political infantility that has been hammered into its people for centuries: Humility, obedience and tolerance are the main virtues imposed on us by our Orthodox culture. It is therefore no wonder that institutions such as the Russian Orthodox Church have recently produced first-class propaganda weapons, calling on believers to die for their country and proclaiming a monstrous indifference to their own and other people’s lives.” continues Svetlow.

A team of 16 moved from Russia to Kazakhstan to continue development of the Indika game. It should be released in the first quarter of 2024 on PC and as yet unspecified consoles. The publisher is a Polish company 11 bit studios. She has been working with the creators for a long time and helped them move to Kazakhstan. Part of the proceeds from Indika will go to support Ukrainian children suffering from the consequences of war.
