“Sometimes art tends to be painfully true and honestly direct, but it always gives hope, reminding us of the continuity of experience – also in the constant dance of the universe between light and darkness,” cultural journalist Una Meisteretas describes the artist’s works and adds: “One is not possible without the other , and both are secular; they continuously replace each other. Our only task is to learn to accept it, to be aware of the vortex of the dance in which we are drawn and not to lose ourselves in it.”
In 2016, Elita Patmalniece’s exhibition “Levitation” was held in the “Putti” gallery, an integrative art project, within the framework of which, with the participation of the audience, a kind of modern mandala was created – a woman flying above the network of 21st century metropolises. Free, rising above everyday life and the attributes of the current lifestyle culture, it ran across the world. Closer to herself and those areas of her consciousness and life events, the existence of which she probably did not even know at the time.
The black and white drawing covered one wall of the “Putti” gallery and any visitor to the exhibition could participate in coloring it. Picking up the paints and brushes placed right there and letting your hand guide you. Impulsive, passionate, converging in a shared flight of existing and not-yet-existing experiences – here and now, everyone’s individual energy becoming part of the process of creating a work of art.
Elit’s dream was to turn this work into an embroidered painting, and it took seven years to complete. In the autumn of 2023, the work, which consists of five separate fragments, was completed and is currently on display again in the “Putti” gallery – in the exact same place. Metaphorically and figuratively revealing to us the world and the events we have experienced in these years.

Under the influence of crises, pandemics and war anxiety and transformations, everyone encounters their own colors and the colors of our previous world. In the total course of human history, there have not been many periods when we have felt somewhat safe. It’s a wonderful feeling, but very fleeting. In 2016, Elite’s levitating woman tried to tell us that. Were we able to see/see/feel it? Probably not, because we indulged in the woman’s story as a glorious fairy tale, in which the elements of anxiety are nothing more than nightmares.
Look carefully, a love-thirsty heart is beating in the chest of the flying woman, which is especially marked by three arrows flying in its direction. The heart is the solution to everything. The door to a world where harmony returns. Living in the mind, we have forgotten the heart. Now we need to be able to find and polish its rusty key.
