According to the police officer, women and young girls were seated on a metal plate obstructing a well during the ceremonies. The plate then gave way, causing the chute of 13 people. Because of the age of the structure, it could not support the weight of so many people, explained the magistrate of the district, S. Rajalingam. “The victims fell and were crushed by the rubble”, he pointed out.
Following this accident which he called heartbreaking, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that “the local administration is involved for any possible help”.
