In the fight against Covid-19, Geneva closes bars and restaurants

Geneva will have stricter restrictions from Monday than most of Switzerland.

The cantonal government warned that the epidemiological situation had deteriorated significantly and declared a state of emergency.

From Monday evening, all restaurants, bars, cinemas, museums, libraries, swimming pools and other recreational areas will be closed in the canton of Geneva, as well as all shops whose products are not considered essential.

People are encouraged to stay at home and leave only when there is a great need.

Schools in the canton of Geneva will continue to work.

In recent days, more than 1,000 new cases of Covid-19 per day have been registered in the canton, and the number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals and intensive care units is growing rapidly.

HUG’s main hospital in Geneva reported today that it was treating 474 Covid-19 patients, including 56 in the intensive care unit. Two weeks ago, the hospital had 78 Covid-19 patients, 13 of whom were treated in the intensive care unit.

Geneva is the second canton after the canton of Jura, which has introduced a partial quarantine regime.

A few days ago, the Swiss government announced a series of new restrictions on the fight against Covid-19, but did not announce a partial quarantine regime across the country as in the spring.

Throughout Switzerland, it is mandatory for people to wear face masks in closed public spaces.

Masks should also be worn outdoors if it is not possible to keep a proper distance from other people.

Of the European countries, Switzerland is currently experiencing one of the fastest increases in the number of people infected in relation to the total population.

Last week, the number of new cases of Covid-19 registered in Switzerland approached 10,000 a day.

Since the start of the pandemic in Switzerland, more than 150,000 people have been infected with the new coronavirus, of whom around 2,000 have died.
