Governor General of Canada Announces New Appointments to the Order of Canada Including Kim Thúy, Joséphine Bacon, and Lino A. Saputo

The Governor General of Canada, Mary Simon, announced new appointments to the Order of Canada on Thursday, including novelist Kim Thúy, Innu poet Joséphine Bacon and businessman Lino A. Saputo.

Among the 78 appointments, there are 59 members, 3 companions, 15 officers and one honorary officer.

This appointment represents a lot of responsibility, reacted Kim Thúy during an interview with All one morning. My mother would say that I am given this privilege because I have to earn it.

The novelist therefore believes that she will have to speak even more, to amplify the voice of the voiceless, of those newly arrived in the territory and who feel uprooted. She recalled that many people have to flee conflicts today, whether in the Middle East, Asia or Africa.

As a child, Kim Thúy fled Vietnam with her family to take refuge in Quebec, an experience she recounted in a novel published in 2009, Ru.

Brought to the screen by director Charles-Olivier Michaud, the film was a great success in Quebec theaters this year. It has just passed the million dollar mark at the box office, and the novelist says she has received many expressions of sympathy following its release.

Lino A. Saputo, who is also a member of the Order of Canada, is honored for his contribution to the Canadian business community as a passionate business leader and for his philanthropic actions in favor of organizations charitable.
