Georgia is in the bottom 50 places in the country for alcohol consumption per head

ATLANTA, Georgia (Telemundo Atlanta) – People in the United States really like to drink alcoholic beverages, although that varies greatly from state to state.

In fact, although Georgia had a consumption of 1.91 liters per head, this puts the state at number 48 of the main consumers of alcoholic beverages in the country, according to research published by the National Institute against Alcohol Abuse. and Alcoholism, released this Monday and whose most recent data is from 2020.

The data also indicate that alcohol consumption has been declining since 1995, reaching 7.900 billion gallons in 2020. That represents an increase of more than a million gallons from the previous year, mainly driven apparently by the COVID 19 pandemic.

The favorite drink in the country was beer, with some 6.4 million gallons consumed, followed by wine and fermented products, with 931 and 635 million, respectively.

The pandemic not only had an impact on the consumption of alcoholic beverages, but also on the different types of them.

When it comes to beverage consumption in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, the list is topped by New Hampshire, with annual consumption of about 4.83 gallons each year, which could largely be due to no sales tax. in that state and many residents of neighboring places buy their drinks there.

And unsurprisingly, Utah, where the strictest controls against alcohol use have been imposed, is the state with the least drinking, with just 1.36 gallons per head.

However, the total population must also be taken into account, since it is to be expected that the more people inhabit a state, the greater the regional consumption will be.

In this sense, California leads the list with 85.7 million gallons consumed in a year, while Wyoming and Alaska remain in the last two places, with 1.6 and 1.4 million gallons consumed.

And precisely because of the population, Georgia remains in 11th place, with 16.7 million gallons of alcoholic beverages consumed in a year.
