Emilio Sosa, a renowned costume designer, has achieved great success in his career, dressing 94 actors for five Broadway productions this season with a total of 450 costumes. Sosa, who started drawing costumes in the South Bronx, never imagined that his designs would reach such heights.
“I never dreamed of it, but I am experiencing the wonder of being from New York, of being an immigrant, a Dominican from New York, with few resources, a public school, and being at the top of my career that had not been seen before,” said Sosa.
Sosa’s talent and hard work have earned him recognition in the industry. In a historic moment, the Tony Awards were held in upper Manhattan for the first time, and Sosa received two nominations for his designs in “Good Night, Oscar” and “Ain’t No Mo’.”
“I’m telling you that I’m saying it and I still don’t believe it, and I was there,” added Sosa, expressing his disbelief at his achievements.
Sosa, now 57 years old, grew up in a humble background as the third of four siblings. His mother immigrated from the Dominican Republic to join his father, who worked as a superintendent to support the family.
“We grew up, you can say poor, but there was always respect at home, we had to work,” Sosa shared.
Sosa’s passion for drawing began at the age of 7, and he initially aspired to be a fashion designer. However, a summer job as a student at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn led him into the world of costume design.
His biggest inspiration, Sosa revealed, comes from the people and the vibrant energy of New York City. “The people here in New York, the madness of this city,” he said.
Despite his success, Sosa faced a significant setback due to the pandemic. When theaters in New York and across the country closed, he ran out of funds as his work and projects came to a halt.
“When all the theaters in New York closed and then in the entire country, I ran out of funds because my work is what comes next, and when the projects stopped, the checks stopped,” Sosa explained.
In 2021, Sosa made history once again by becoming the first Latino to serve as president of the American Theater Wing, a nonprofit organization that organizes the Tony Awards in collaboration with the Broadway League. In this role, Sosa aims to enhance diversity both on and off the stage.
“God put this title before me so that I can bring more people after me. This is not at all about me,” Sosa emphasized, highlighting his mission to create opportunities for others in the industry.
