First corona vaccination in Germany in a retirement home in Halberstadt

One day before the official Germany-wide vaccination start, the first residents of a nursing home in Halberstadt were vaccinated against the corona virus in the Harz district. On Saturday afternoon, according to information from MDR SACHSEN-ANHALT, a 101-year-old was the first person in Germany to receive the vaccine from the company Biontech / Pfizer. According to the home operator Tobias Krüger, a total of 40 residents and 11 employees were vaccinated.

An employee of the Harz district pandemic, Karsten Fischer, told MDR SACHSEN-ANHALT that the vaccine was also distributed to the staff of three hospitals in the Harz district on Saturday: the Harz Clinic in Wernigerode, the Lung Clinic in Ballenstedt and the Ameos- Hospital in Halberstadt. There, the clinic employees would vaccinate each other.

The Harz district did not want to waste any time

According to Fischer, the fact that the Harz district is one day earlier with the vaccination than the rest of Germany is due to the fact that the logistics were set up faster.

We don’t want to waste that one day that the vaccine loses its shelf life. We want to deploy it right away.

The technical director of the vaccination center in the Harz district, Immo Kramer, also said to MDR SACHSEN-ANHALT: “Every day counts for us.” The next vaccine delivery is expected on December 30th. This batch is held for the second vaccination appointment, so Kramer. Because every person receives two doses of vaccine against the coronavirus every three weeks. Kramer says he anticipates that the first appointments at the Harz vaccination center will be available from mid-January onwards.

Official nationwide vaccination start on Sunday

Vaccinations should start nationwide on Sunday. Saxony-Anhalt received the first 9,750 vaccine doses on Saturday, which were distributed to the districts and independent cities. The sensitive vaccine is delivered in powder form and cooled to minus 70 degrees. On site, it must first be “warmed” to 0 degrees for several hours and then mixed with sodium chloride to form a solution.

First, according to the vaccination plan, people in old people’s and nursing homes as well as vulnerable staff in hospitals are vaccinated. In the vaccination centers established in the rural districts and urban districts, operations should start as soon as sufficient vaccine is available. Only those who have an appointment can be vaccinated. According to the State Ministry of Social Affairs, appointments will probably begin in mid-January.
