Doctors Emphasize the Impact of Vaccination on Decreasing Respiratory Virus Infections During the Holidays

Like every Christmas, respiratory virus infections increase exponentially and, as a result, so do hospital admissions. However, the increase in infections is not proportional to that in income and this is motivated, according to doctors, by vaccination.

“This Wednesday marks three years since the first vaccine against covid that was given in Extremadura and we can say, blessed vaccines,” says Luis Tobajas, a doctor at the San Jorge health center in Cáceres. “Because the different conditions that are occurring, although there are always people who require hospitalization due to their previous pathologies, are being milder, and this is thanks to vaccination,” corroborates Carlos Arjona, president of the Autonomous Council of Medical Associations of Estremadura.

In summary, “there are many infections but the viruses behave less aggressively due to vaccines and, therefore, there are fewer cases of pneumonia and other complications.” This is also why both doctors, just as the Ministry of Health has been doing, emphasize the need to get vaccinated.

There is still time for this. It should be remembered that the vaccination campaign is still underway until January 31 and there is still room to improve the immunization data achieved so far. According to the latest data from the SES, the campaign against the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) has managed to immunize almost one hundred percent of the target population, but not the flu and covid.

Regarding influenza, an average coverage in Extremadura has been achieved in people aged 60 years or over of 53.95% and 64.67% in people under 60 years of age with risk factors.

Regarding covid, immunization of the population aged 60 and over is 40%; In children under that age at risk, only 26% have been vaccinated.
