West Virginia Reports First Case of Measles Since 2009

Huntington, W.Va. – West Virginia has confirmed its first case of measles since 2009, raising concerns over potential outbreak. The West Virginia Department of Health (WVDOH) released a statement informing the public about the latest development.

Case Confirmed in Morgantown

The WVDOH revealed that the affected individual in this case is a person who had recently traveled abroad and was under-vaccinated. According to the WVDOH website, the infected person has been identified in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Potential Exposure and High Infection Risk

The WVDOH expressed concerns over potential widespread exposure, as 152 individuals have been identified as having potentially come into close contact with the infected person. Disturbingly, 62 individuals lack proper documentation of measles immunization, putting them at a high risk of contracting this contagious illness.

Counties with Potential Exposure

The WVDOH identified several counties where potential exposure to measles has occurred. They include Berkeley, Braxton, Brooke, Doddridge, Gilmer, Grant, Greenbrier, Hampshire, Hancock, Kanawha, Logan, Marion, Marshall, Mason, McDowell, Mercer, Mineral, Monongalia, Ohio, Pendleton, Pleasants, Preston, Putnam, Randolph, Roane, Summers, Taylor, Wetzel, and Wood.

The Impact and Risks

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia, swelling of the brain, and even death. Recognizing the symptoms is crucial since an early diagnosis can help limit the spread of the disease.

Identifying Measles Symptoms

The WVDOH warns that symptoms typically begin with a fever and progress to a cough, runny nose, and a red rash. Notably, a distinct rash of tiny red spots typically appears around the head before spreading to other parts of the body.
