Do blood clots lead to death? – Wel.nl

Why some people die from the coronavirus and others don’t is still not entirely clear. Blood clots in the lungs may be related to it. It is a hitherto little known complication of Covid-19, writes The Washington Post, among others.

Patients who become seriously ill from the coronavirus often have severe breathing problems, but also organ failure. But doctors are now also seeing blood clots in the lungs and other places in the body in some patients. These can lead to blockages in the blood vessels leading to strokes, heart attacks and possibly death.

New York autopsy data shows that about 40 percent of patients who died after leaving the hospital had blood clots in the body. There were sometimes hundreds of small lumps in the lungs. Dutch researchers state that about a third of corona patients had a complication from blood clots.

“The problem we have is that while we understand that there are blood clots, we still don’t understand why they are there,” said University of Pennsylvania professor Lewis Kaplan. “We simply don’t know. And that frightens us ”.

“Doctors annually treat people with coagulation complications, from persons with cancer to victims of severe trauma, but what we now see in corona patients is unseen,” the scientist concludes.
