Discover the History of New York City at the Museum of the City of New York

The Museum of the City of New York is an institution dedicated to telling the history of our city, founded in 1923.

At first the museum operated in what is now the official residence of the city mayor, Gracie Mansion.

Visitors can see objects and photographs that tell what the five boroughs of the city were like when the museum was opened, at the beginning of the 1920s, when an economic boom was being experienced that gave way to a great transformation of the city with the appearance of skyscrapers and apartment buildings.

The Museum of the City of New York is located at 1220 Fifth Avenue on the corner of 103rd Street in East Harlem.

It is open on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and from Friday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is accessible to disabled people.

The museum is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Remember that you must make a reservation if you go as part of a group of more than 10 people.

Currently, the Museum of the City of New York is celebrating the centenary of its founding with an exhibition that reviews its own origin story that includes objects of historical value and others, apparently, more trivial, such as a seat from the old Yankee Stadium or the tools that were used in the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge which began in 1869 and finished in 1883.

The city put a message on social networks to celebrate the Museum’s centenary.

“Happy Centennial, @MuseumofCityNY! 🎂 🎉

“Located on Fifth Avenue and 103rd Street, for 100 years, the Museum of the City of New York tells the story of the city from its founding, through interesting photographs and historical objects,” the message reads.

Admission prices are as follows: adults pay $20; People over 65 and students pay $14 and must present identification. Children and adolescents under 19 years of age enter free.
