Deer: to move to super heavy weight, it must be clear that I will fight the best

At the end of September, the deer won the Cuban Juniel Dorticos in the final of the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) in Munich and won the Muhammad Ali trophy, the International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion belt in the first heavyweight and the magazine “The Ring”.

After returning to Latvia, Briedis mentioned that he was considering switching to superweight, where the world’s leading boxers are fighting.

“In the near future we need to understand whether to stay in the first heavyweight and look for interesting battles in this division or move to super heavyweight. But we need to be clear that I will fight the best heavyweights,” WBSS quotes Deer.

At the end of October, Briežis’ former opponent Oleksandr Usiks spent his second fight in super heavy weight, who defeated Derek Chisor in points in a heavy fight.

“He showed himself well against Chisor, but it wasn’t Usik that we came to see. I don’t know what was the reason, Usik himself can say that, but I don’t think it was the best version of him,” says Briedis.

As Briedis mentioned in the program “Delfi TV with Jānis Domburs” this week, he could have the next fight in the first quarter of 2021. Much will be determined by the upcoming battle of Polish Krzysztof Glovacki and English Lawrence Okoly on December 12 in London.

“If Okolijs wins, he becomes the world champion. He is an Englishman – there is another Pandora’s box again,” said Briedis. “Probably the next fight will be in the first quarter of next year. We’ll see that after the events of December. Hopefully we’ll go and see everything in person.”

Glovackis, who was stopped by Briedis in the WBSS semi-finals, and Okoli will fight for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) champion belt in December.

The most prestigious World Boxing Council (WBC) belt is currently owned by Congolese boxer Ilung Makabu, while the World Boxing Association (WBA) champion is currently Frenchman Arsen Gularmirjan.

35-year-old Briedis has won 27 victories in his career as a professional boxer, 19 of whom have been killed. He suffered one loss – in the semifinals of the first season of the WBSS in Riga against the Ukrainian Oleksandr Usik.
