COVID and Flu Vaccines: Fifth Dose and Joint Administration for Target Groups in Andalusia

The fifth dose of the covid vaccine will be administered from October together with that of the flu to protect the target groups from both infections, after 60% coverage of these groups was reached in 2022, when it should have reached “the 80-85%». The Public Health Commission recommends them to people over 60 years of age, vulnerable groups, pregnant women, immunosuppressed people and health personnel. Likewise, the Ministry of Health and Consumption hopes that by the time the campaign begins, the vaccine against the Omicron XBB 1.5 variant, better known as Kraken, will have already arrived in Andalusia.

The health districts of the province of Granada are finalizing the lists of babies to be immunized against bronchiolitis -it is the first time that it has been carried out-, then it will be the turn of the covid and the flu and the joint administration of both is recommended. The campaign will begin in October, although the date may be adapted depending on the availability of vaccines, as detailed by the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System.

In this sense, the Minister of Health and Consumption of the Junta de Andalucía, Catalina García, does not see the need for the fifth dose against covid-19 to be inoculated to the entire Andalusian population in general, since it has “an immune system that responds to interaction with the virus and is protected.” On the other hand, she recalls that in 2022 the data was “short”, with 60% of the target population immunized, when “80-85%” should have been reached. The goal for this 2023-2024 season is to achieve 75% vaccination coverage in these groups.

recommendations

The Ministry of Health has not yet received instructions from the Ministry of Health, as reported to IDEAL, but the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System has already approved the vaccination recommendations for this season. He advises administering the flu and covid-19 dose to people 60 years of age or older; five years or more inmates in residences for the elderly and centers for disabilities; pregnant women in any trimester of pregnancy and women up to six months after delivery who have not been vaccinated during pregnancy. It is also recommended for people under 60 years of age with risk conditions, such as cancer, immunosuppression, morbid obesity, chronic kidney disease, celiac disease or Down syndrome, among others. Likewise, those who live with these patients are included in the list.

It is also recommended for the staff of public and private health and socio-health centers, as well as for State Security Forces and Corps, Firefighters and the Civil Protection service.

Vaccines in Grenada

Pfizer / BioNtech, Moderna, AstraZeneca / Oxford, Janssen, Novavax and Sanofi vaccines are being administered in Granada. Of the latter, only ten doses have been administered to date in the province, according to the Ministry of Health. The recommendation at the European level is that the vaccines to be administered in the next season are monovalent against the Kraken variant. “The new adapted vaccines are expected to be available before the season begins,” insists the Interterritorial Council.

On the other hand, one of the novelties of last season was the flu vaccination of the entire child population between 6 and 59 months (up to 4 years and 11 months). This 2023 will be repeated, being “highly recommended, because it is effective and safe”, as admitted by the Andalusian Vaccination Plan.
