The mayors of the East Frisian Islands hope that the islanders can be vaccinated against the corona virus faster. They have made a corresponding proposal to the state government.
The district administrators of the Aurich, Wittmund, Leer and Friesland districts also support the idea. Friesland’s district administrator Sven Ambrosy (SPD) said that if enough vaccine was available, people on the islands could be vaccinated. This could be done by the mobile teams, which are due to travel soon for the vaccinations of particularly vulnerable groups.

The decisive factor is the amount of vaccine
The risk of infection posed by tourists as soon as travel is permitted again speaks in favor of this variant, said Ambrosy. Another argument is the great effort to get the vaccines to the islands. However, it is unclear whether the mobile vaccination teams are also allowed to vaccinate other parts of the population on the islands. However, the country has promised to examine this possibility. Whether this happens depends on the amount of vaccine available, says Ambrosy.
Great demands on logistics
Supplying the islands with vaccines poses logistical challenges for the districts. The ferry connections to the islands of Wangerooge, Spiekeroog, Baltrum and Juist depend on the tides and therefore do not run regularly. In addition, there are special requirements for the vaccine transport, the substance from the companies Biontech and Pfizer, for example, has to be stored at minus 70 degrees. There are no plans for the islands to have their own vaccination centers like those on the mainland.
