Corona brings the end to Christmas markets – WESER-KURIER

The big Christmas market in Duisburg would have started this Thursday – two and a half weeks before the 1st Advent. That was already the case in 2019 and therefore earlier than ever, as it was called back then.

Criticism came from the churches. But the city defended itself, there was a great demand from visitors. This year the whole market was canceled due to Corona – “against the background of the strongly increasing numbers of infections”. No way had been found to save the Christmas market. “There should still be a Christmas flair with festive lighting.”

It should start in Essen on November 14th, but the market there is also on hold due to Corona and the partial lockdown in Germany. A few cities are pursuing the idea of opening at least individual huts scattered around the city center in December.

Actually, the Christmas markets in most cities in German-speaking countries only open after the Sunday of the Dead, which falls on November 22 this year. Because of the partial lockdown, everything is taboo until November 30th anyway.

Most of the markets have been completely canceled, including the world-famous Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg. There were also cancellations in Erfurt, Magdeburg, Bielefeld, Hamburg, Bremen, Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich, Düsseldorf and Cologne, for example.

The “Bayreuth Winter Village”, which otherwise starts in October and proudly calls itself the first Christmas get-together “in all of Germany and certainly also in Europe”, has also been canceled for 2020.

The already troubled showmen sounded the alarm that after the many fancy folk festivals and without Christmas markets, they were completely on their necks.
