Chile supports glacier protection

Climate change – A huge new national park in Chile should protect hundreds of glaciers in the Andes from the effects of climate change.

The national glacier park will cover 75,000 hectares of land, said Chilean President Sebastian Pinera on Saturday when announcing the project. With this, Chile manages to protect 368 glaciers.

“The glaciers contain 32 times as much water as El Yeso,” Piñera said, referring to a large reservoir that supplies water to the population of the capital, Santiago, Chile. The creation of the park is a fundamental step that Chile is taking to combat the destruction of nature.

The University of Chile recently published a study warning of the country’s glaciers melting. Along with Canada, the USA, Russia and China, Chile is one of the ten countries with the highest glacier mass in the world.
