Brazil’s Minister for Women, Family and Human Rights (MMFDH), Damares Alves, 55, launched a campaign this month to delay the average age at which young Brazilians start sexual activity.
“When Damares talks about sexual abstinence, they criticize … I have a 9-year-old daughter and I don’t want her to be pregnant next year …”, said the head of state, after leaving the Palácio da Alvorada, his official residence in Brasília.
Among the organizations that oppose the MMFDH campaign is the Feminist Network of Gynecologists and Obstetricians, which issued a statement in which it stresses that “preaching abstinence, and failing to provide adequate information on reproductive and sexual health, will not prevent teenagers stop having sex ».
