Negotiations for a nuclear pact with Iran stall. Germany, France and Great Britain see an end to the talks soon. The US is calling on Tehran to revert to the nuclear deal.

AIn view of the stalled negotiations to restore the 2015 nuclear pact with Iran, the European partners consider failure to be possible. “The continued nuclear escalation in Iran means that we will quickly reach the end of the road,” announced Germany, along with France and Great Britain, ahead of a UN Security Council meeting in New York on Tuesday. Iran’s nuclear program has never been more advanced than it is now.

The German UN ambassador Antje Leendertse said at the meeting that the steps taken by Tehran over the past six months are incompatible with the nuclear deal. “The time window closes quickly,” said Leendertse.

In the talks currently ongoing in Vienna, Germany, France, Great Britain, Russia and China are trying to mediate between Iran and the USA. Washington pulled out of the nuclear deal in 2018. In response to new US sanctions, Tehran ignored agreed nuclear restrictions designed to prevent the development of nuclear weapons. Iran has also restricted inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in recent months.

The United States called on Tehran on Tuesday to revert to the nuclear deal in Vienna: “Iran must first show seriousness at the table and come back to complying with the agreement at short notice,” said American UN Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield in the Security Council.

Iran’s ambassador Majid Takht-Ravanchi rejected the allegations: “Make no mistake, we are not setting any preconditions or new conditions.” Iran only wants to return to the concessions agreed in the agreement.

The UN commissioner for political affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, had previously asked the US to lift its sanctions against Iran. At the same time, Iran had to reverse steps that were not in line with its obligations under the nuclear deal.
