BALL – Damascus announces to regain control of the city of Aleppo (Syria)

The Syrian regime said on Sunday it had regained control of the city of Aleppo, despite continuing the offensive against the ‘jihadist’ movement in the northwest of the country, according to international organizations and state media.

Aleppo is the second largest city in Syria and the capital of a region with its name that had been taken by assault by the Islamic State, having since been the target of successive attacks by international troops and the regime of President Bahsar al-Assad.

The Syrian media guarantees that the government army has managed to control Aleppo, supported by air strikes by Russian allies.

The ‘jihadist’ movement in the region, controlled by the Hayat Tahrir al-Cham faction, still dominates an important part of the Idelb region and adjacent sectors, such as the Aleppo, Hama and Latakia regions.

After intense attacks, over the past few days, the armed forces loyal to the Bashar al-Assad regime have gained control of all locations around Aleppo, for the first time since 2012, “protecting the city from rebel attacks”, from agreement with the Syrian Human Rights Observatory.

According to this non-governmental organization, Syrian forces “have progressed rapidly in the north and west of the province of Aleppo, after the total withdrawal of rebel factions, having taken control of 30 villages”.

The Syrian army will also have controlled an important access route that links Aleppo to the capital Damascus.

Since December, more than 800,000 people have been displaced from the region, fleeing the violent conflicts that have already claimed more than 380,000 deaths.

Supported by Russia and Iran, the Syrian regime’s forces have already recovered more than 70% of the territory.
