After Battling Cancer and Facing Mobility Issues, Raynham Farmer Tony Arruda Receives Overwhelming Support from Community and Launches GoFundMe

Raynham Farmer Struggles with Severe Mobility Issues After Battle with Cancer

RAYNHAM — The life of Raynham farmer Tony Arruda has been upended after enduring three years of chemotherapy treatments, radiation therapy, and multiple surgeries. Tony’s battle with stage four colon cancer has left him with severe mobility issues, greatly affecting his ability to pursue his passion for farming. Along with his partner of over 20 years, Brook Berenger-Leite, Tony faces a challenging road to recovery.

Arruda, known for his big heart and love for animals, has overcome a series of tragic events in his life. In 1978, his sister, Mary-Lou Arruda, was tragically abducted, tied to a tree, and strangled to death at the young age of 15. This devastating case left a lasting impact on the town of Raynham.

Recently, while Tony was undergoing chemotherapy, his father was killed in a tragic accident when a truck fell on him while he was at work. A year later, Tony’s mother, Joanne Arruda, passed away. These consecutive losses have compounded the challenges Tony and Brook face in their lives.

Community Support and Resilience

In the face of these hardships, the farming community of Raynham and Tony’s friends have come together to provide support and assistance during this difficult time. They have built a wheelchair ramp for Tony and have helped with tasks such as delivering food, fixing their well, and caring for the farm animals. Though Tony’s progress has been slow, he has shown resilience and determination, taking small steps towards recovery.

Devastating Diagnosis and Loss of Livelihood

In April of 2021, Tony Arruda received a devastating diagnosis – stage four colon cancer that had spread to his liver and lungs. His journey included rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgeries. Sadly, complications from a larger surgery led to Tony experiencing severe mobility issues, restricting his ability to walk. This loss of mobility has had a significant emotional and financial impact, as Tony’s livelihood depends on his ability to work as a hay farmer.

A Raynham Community United

Tony and Brook have been forced to navigate the challenges of surviving with the loss of their incomes. However, the incredible support from friends, family, and the tightly-knit farming community has been instrumental in helping them through this difficult time. The community has rallied around them, providing assistance with various tasks and contributing greatly to their emotional and financial well-being.

Seeking Financial Assistance

Given the financial strain brought on by the inability to work and mounting medical expenses, Brook has set up a gofundme campaign to help alleviate their financial burden. The goal is to raise $15,000, enabling Tony to concentrate on his rehabilitation without the weight of financial worries.

Road to Recovery

Despite the challenges, Tony remains determined and maintains a positive outlook. He has been diligently participating in therapy, learning to walk short distances with the aid of a walker. His progress has been commendable, considering the complexity of his medical condition. The next steps for Tony involve a liver resection, but doctors have advised a period of healing and strength-building before proceeding with another major surgery.

In the face of adversity, Tony Arruda continues to display resilience, and the unwavering support of the Raynham community remains a source of inspiration.
