Activation of Lane Control Cameras on Q58 Bus Aims to Improve Service and Increase Safety for Passengers

Hilda Collado has been a passenger on the Q58 bus in Corona, Queens for years.

The announcement that they will activate lane control cameras on these buses to improve service and reduce accidents gives him a lot of peace of mind.

“It’s good because there is more security like this for the bus,” said Collado.

Collado is one of the thousands of New Yorkers who wait for the bus daily, which is often delayed because other vehicles use the bus lane.

“Perhaps when they do it like this it will be better, it will take less time,” added Collado.

According to MTA data, through May of this year, the average speed on the Q58 is 7.6 mph, 10 percent slower than the average Queens local route.

With the implementation of the camera system, the MTA seeks to increase the speed of this service by five percent.

The ABLE camera system captures drivers violating bus lane rules in real time. They collect license plate numbers, photos and videos, along with location and timestamp information.

“You asked for more laser buses. We are delivering ⚡️

“The bus lane control cameras have reached Q58 🚌.

“Last year, Q58 was the second-busiest route in our system, carrying more than 6.7 million riders. Cleared bus lanes mean faster travel for more than 28,700 customers daily,” the MTA wrote in a message on social networks.

Drivers who are caught violating bus lane rules will receive an initial fine of $50 and if they are repeat offenders, the fine could go up to $250.

Some drivers say that due to the number of vehicles on the streets, sometimes the bus line is the only one available and they hope that the authorities will be fair in reviewing the videos before issuing a ticket.

“Because what is the use of giving a person a ticket when the person is forced to pass because there is a truck doing a delivery, or two or three tractor trailers,” said José Riverón.
