a UNAM Film Library cycle

In the month of childhood the UNAM Film Library, with the support of Mexican Institute of Cinematography and platforms Film latino Y HouseCanibal, celebrate the acting work of boys and girls, indispensable presences in the seventh art, with a cycle full of notable performances and leading roles that fell to minors.

Until April 30, enjoy almost twenty films, including feature films and shorts, from Austria, Mexico, France, Yemen, Brazil and Peru, among other countries; diverse realities seen from the child’s perspective, which often collides with an adult world that generally does not pay the necessary attention to it. From innocent visions to stark realities, drama, humor, and criticism can fall on children, too.

Some of the must-sees of this sample will be:

Treasures (Mexico, 2017) by María Novaro; The film, narrated by six-year-old Jacinta, deals with a centuries-old quest in which the children of a fishing community on the coast of Guerrero participate, and explores that adventurous spirit present in almost all children and which is diluted with the years. (Available on Saturday 17th by FilminLatino)

My name is Nojoom, I am ten years old and I want a divorce (Yemen-France-United Arab Emirates, 2014) by Khadija Al-Salami; Child marriage in Yemen is exposed in this film, where a ten-year-old girl goes to court in search of her freedom, as her father, unable to provide for his family, sold her to a man. Practices that should already be eradicated are shown in this risky tape that was filmed clandestinely in that Middle Eastern country. (It can be seen on Sunday 18 on the Filmoteca website)

What do we do with Maisie? (United States, 2012) by Scott McGehee and David Siegel; contemporary revision of the novel by Henry James, where a six-year-old girl is caught in the crossfire caused by the divorce of her parents, both prominent figures in New York society. In that legal battle that only hurts the child, Maisie finds comfort in her parents’ new partners. (Don’t miss it on Wednesday 21 on the Filmoteca website)

The cycle concludes with My last friend (Brazil, 2015) by Hector Babenco; tells the story of Diego, a film director who, knowing that he is terminally ill, puts his life aside and begins a long treatment in a hospital, where he meets a boy who becomes his best friend. (You can see them on Friday 30th through CasaCanibal)

All tapes will be available free of charge for 24 hours. Check the schedules and the rest of the programming on the page of the UNAM Film Library.
