The incident took place in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. There were about 50 people in the trailer, they were returning from a religious ceremony. The driver lost control, causing the tractor and trailer to fall into the pond.
As a result, at least 26 people were killed and another 16 were injured. According to AFP, the trailer was mostly women and children.
