20 minutes – No camera under the screen yet? here’s why

By pushing the limits of smartphone screens ever further, in order to reduce the edges of the front panel as much as possible, manufacturers have had to find different solutions to integrate cameras on the front of their mobiles: from the notch of the latest iPhones on the punch in the slab at Samsung in particular, or the retractable selfie camera adopted by Oppo, OnePlus or Xiaomi.

Another solution is to hide the front sensor directly under the screen. Oppo and Xiaomi have already shown their advances in this area with prototypes, but no device incorporating this technology has been marketed. Lu Weibing, director of the Redmi brand at Xiaomi, explained on the Chinese social network Weibo the technical obstacles which prevent for the moment from adopting this solution, reports the Android Authority site: The current number of pixels per inch (ppi) of the screen is around 400, and when the ppi is this level, the transmission light in the camera is very dim, which seriously affects the photo effect, he said. The company excludes the possibility of reducing the number of ppi on a part of the screen, as this would degrade the display with colored spots.

Consumers will therefore have to be patient before acquiring smartphones with a front sensor hidden under the screen. A viable alternative could however have already been found. According to rumors, Nokia could be ahead of other manufacturers at the next Mobile World Congress, the annual mobile show which will take place at the end of February in Barcelona. The brand, managed by the Finnish company HMD Global, should unveil a model, the Nokia 9.2 Pureview, equipped with such technology. Case to follow.
