“There were many more policemen than protesters”

“Tear gas against women? Really, @PolskaPolicja? The use of direct coercion must be justified and proportionate, it must be a last resort. I believe that using it against the demonstrations of women and youth had no basis. There were many more policemen than protesters” – he wrote at night with Wednesdays on Thursday on Twitter, the president of the capital.

Trzaskowski informed that representatives of the city were present on the spot and watched the situation. “As president @warszawa, I am appealing to refrain from unjustified actions and await explanations. Municipal services are checking the monitoring recordings” – he said.

The “Blockade of the Seym” was scheduled for 6 p.m., but several dozen police cars appeared on Wiejska Street much earlier. The area was secured by policemen and the Military Police in a force that had not been seen here for a long time.

The organizers quickly decided to go to the vicinity of the Ministry of Justice, i.e. Aleja Ujazdowskie towards Na Rozdrożu Square. However, at the level of Aleja Róż, officers blocked the march. The demonstration began to spread, many people went to the Trzech Krzyży square, others went to Marszałkowska Street. At the de Gaulle roundabout, there were scuffles and verbal clashes with the police.

Later, the demonstration moved to Powstańców Warszawy Square, where large police forces were also deployed. At some point, the officers started pushing the demonstrators into nearby streets. They were crammed in, among others on Warecka Street, where they “bounced” from the cordon and returned to the square. There were scuffles, undisguised officers intervened (they only had armbands marked “police”), and gas was used. As we found out unofficially, there are detainees.

The police set up two cordons on the two edges of the square. To leave the square, you had to show an identity document. There was a long line of people for ID cards. After 23 the square was deserted.

Protests over tightening abortion laws

Since October 22, protests have been taking place across the country in opposition to the tightening of anti-abortion provisions as a result of the Constitutional Tribunal’s judgment. The Tribunal, led by Julia Przyłębska, ruled that the provision of the so-called anti-abortion act of 1993, which allowed for termination of pregnancy in the event of severe and irreversible impairment of the fetus or an incurable disease that threatens its life, is inconsistent with the constitution. The provision will cease to apply with the publication of the judgment, but this has not yet been announced.
