Webinar on Combating Bias and Promoting Gender Equality in AI

While AI can be used to make our daily lives easier and help solve some of the most pressing societal challenges, research shows unambiguously that the datasets used by AI are tainted with gender biases.

AI can replicate and perpetuate human biases, furthering the stigma and marginalization of women globally. This is why it is essential to make targeted and systematic efforts to combat biases in machine-human interfaces and ensure that technology does not amplify societal inequalities and harmful gender stereotypes.

AI systems can facilitate inclusion, diversity and equal treatment. The potential of AI to correct discrimination is undeniable and can be fully harnessed through awareness, transparency and oversight.

This webinar aims to explore both the alarming negative impact of AI systems on gender equality, the reasons for this reality and how to mitigate this risk, as well as the opportunities offered by well-designed systems and regulated to advance gender equality. Speakers also shared their ideas on the type of regulatory environment and government support initiatives that could bring changes in the right direction.

On Wednesday April 19, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. (CET), the Secretariat of the Committee on Artificial Intelligence (CAI) organized a webinar on the sidelines of the fifth plenary meeting of the CAI. It is thematically linked to the review of the draft Convention [cadre] of the Council of Europe on AI, human rights, democracy and the rule of law, which will be discussed during the meeting.

The event brought together national and international experts from around the world to discuss current challenges and opportunities in combating bias and promoting equality in AI.
