“Man Swallowed by Sinkhole in His Bedroom: A Horrifying Incident in Florida”

Jakarta

Like a scene in a horror movie, Jeff Bush (37) disappeared because of this sinkhole located in his bedroom. In the hole it went six meters and immediately trapped Jeff there.

This story happened on March 1, 2013 in Florida, United States of America, and this bad experience has gone viral again on the Reddit forum. Sinkholes are a hole in the ground, suddenly, caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer.

Jeff’s brother, Jeremy, was in another room with his girlfriend, Hannah. When they heard Jeff screaming, the two of them immediately ran to Jeff’s room.

“We ran downstairs, I turned on the light and we opened the door. All we saw was a big old hole, and Jeff was gone,” Hannah told ABC Action News.

Launch IFL Science, Jeremy had time to jump into the hole to save his brother. However, Jeremy was eventually pulled up for security reasons by the police. It’s clear, the ground that Jeremy stepped on continued to decline.

“I wanted to save my brother. I couldn’t do anything. I swear I heard him calling my name to help him,” said Jeremy.

Rescuers were unable to find Jeff Bush’s body from the pit. The hole had engulfed the bedroom furniture with it. The next day, engineers determined the house and grounds were too dangerous to undertake further rescue efforts. In the end, the hole was filled with gravel.

Several years later, the hole reappeared at that location. The location was then fenced off from the public.

Florida area is rich in limestone. This makes them very vulnerable to sinkhole.

“Sinkholes are most common in what geologists call, ‘karst fields,'” explains the US Geological Survey.

“These are areas where rock types below the soil surface can naturally be dissolved by groundwater circulating through them. Dissolvable rock includes layers and domes of salt, gypsum, limestone, and other carbonate rocks,” he continued.

With the rock beneath dissolving, underground caverns were left beneath the surface. When the weakened surface collapses into the cave, it creates a sinkhole. They vary in size, from very small to large. An example of this is seen in Xiaozhai Tiankeng, which is known as the Xiaozhai Heavenly Hole. The Xiaozhai sinkhole, which is considered the largest in the world, is about 537 meters wide and 662 meters deep.
