The launch of the new generation consoles in Spain, the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X, has aggravated a problem that was already worrying: the space occupied by modern video games.

The new installments of titles like Call of Duty, Hitman, The Borderlands raised the controversy for the amount of free gigabytes needed to install them on our console or computer.

It’s not just that storage isn’t cheap; is that it is difficult to find devices designed for the task of storing our games so that we can play them whenever we want. Exactly for this specific task, Toshiba presents the Canvio Gaming range of external hard drives, which can be found with a starting price of 66 euros.

This is the Toshiba Canvio Gaming

The Japanese brand is well known to anyone who has ever thought of buying a hard drive, or HDD; and in recent years, it is its Canvio portable range that has gained more popularity, with storage at a good price and designed for the user who needs to carry all their data.

But the demand has changed. The popularization of SSDs means that more and more users are looking for maximum speed in their storage; External SSD models on the new WD My Passport demonstrate just how far this technology has improved.

Traditional hard drives still have a say. SSDs are faster, but the cost per GB is still higher; And when you want to store all your movies, photos, and yes, video games, a hard drive still has a lot to say.

This is what the Canvio Gaming range tries to demonstrate. Portable hard drives designed for gamers, how does that work?

Hard drive for gamers

The Toshiba Canvio Gaming that we have been able to test is a small hard drive that allows us to store our games, both on PlayStation and Xbox consoles and on the computer.

It must be clarified that the Canvio Gaming is not a substitute for SSDs, but a complement; it’s especially true if you have a newer PS5, Xbox Series X, or a gaming SSD on your computer. In those cases, you should not install your games on the Canvio Gaming, but use it to save your games, making a backup that you can transport and use whenever you want.

The performance tests we’ve run confirm the obvious: this is a hard drive. Pointer, but a hard drive after all. With sequential read rates of 150MB / s, you don’t have any ‘bottlenecks’ thanks to the built-in USB 3.2 Gen 1 connection, which you really don’t need but are welcome. Those figures are constant across the various devices we’ve tested, like the new Asus ROG Flow X13 or the Intel NUC 9 Extreme.

The figures are not deceiving, this is one of the fastest external hard drives on the market, and in some games, that is enough; If for any circumstance it becomes your only option to install and play your games, you will have an experience much superior to that of other slower models.

Fast, for a hard drive

But Toshiba itself claims that this is not the goal of Canvio Gaming. This external hard drive is used to store our games, and in that sense, it has fulfilled its function in an exceptional way. Transfer rates allow us to store our games, take them with us, and install them on your computer, quickly.

This is especially useful, for example, for make space in our console, saving games that we are not enjoying right now, but that we want to return to in the future.

Another potential use is to pass games from one team to another. For example, on Steam you can download a game to your computer, transfer it to your Canvio Gaming, and then install it on your laptop without having to download all the files again. Transferring the game from disk will be much faster than downloading it again, and it will not consume data; then, we only have to install Steam and identify ourselves with our account so that the program recognizes it and starts playing without further ado.

The consoles also have limited space, so having a hard drive that stores our games while we switch from one to another can be highly recommended. As the games take up more, it is something that we will appreciate, and the Canvio Gaming are prepared for that with capacities of up to 4 TB.

Canvio Gaming is formatted by default in exFAT, which makes it compatible with most modern Windows and Mac operating systems, as well as consoles. Although if you have a PS4 or Xbox One, you should make sure you have the latest firmware installed; on this page we have a lthe same compatibility.

Modern look

The Canvio Gaming will do all of that with an attractive design. You can see that it is designed to combine with both the new generation and the last generation consoles; The PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X in particular should look great next to this hard drive.

The aesthetic detail that stands out the most is the indicator light that the disc is working, which is an intense blue color, again reminding us of the design of the consoles.

The housing is made up of two gray plastic parts; darker at the bottom and lighter at the top. There aren’t many distractions, beyond the Toshiba logo, so something may go unnoticed. In addition, it is very small, measuring 80 x 111 x 13.5 mm and 80 x 111 x 19.5 mm in the 4 TB version.

And although it is heavier than an SSD, it is relatively light for an HDD, weighing in at just 149 grams (1 and 2 TB) and 210 grams (4 TB). A great point in favor is that it does not need external power, since it works only by connecting the hard disk to a USB-A port that we have free with the included cable; a cable that, as is usual in all manufacturers, could be longer, but at least it is not the shortest we have seen and is more useful.

Save your games

The new Toshiba Canvio Gaming range is made up of high-performance hard drives, which are at the same time very light and portable, something that until recently seemed impossible.

It’s a good reminder that while hard drives may seem to have ‘been left behind’, their development is actually continuing. moving forward and breaking barriers. A few years ago, many of us would have done the impossible to get a hard drive like the Canvio Gaming, and it was only the arrival of SSDs that has changed that.

But the Canvio Gaming is no match for a good external SSD; they are simply on two different playing fields. With Canvio Gaming, we can save our games and files quickly, transport them without hassle and use them whenever we want just by connecting a cable; And the best thing is that it does it cheaper.

At the time of writing these words, The Toshiba Canvio Gaming 1 TB is available for 66.33 euros on Amazon, the 2 TB version for 70.99 euros, and the 4 TB version, for 116.96 euros. That is much less than what an SSD with the same capacities costs, and it will allow us to store all our games without problems.
