Volkswagen’s Struggle with Electric Car Sales: Has the Interest Been Overestimated?

Has Volkswagen overestimated the interest in electric cars? According to the latest information, the demand for ID.4 and ID.7 is 30 percent lower than the German manufacturer originally planned. And so at the factory in Emden, shifts and the number of employees are also being reduced, albeit only temporarily. However, the carmaker hopes that the situation will improve by the end of the year.

The newspaper drew attention to the problems with the sale of electric Volkswagens Northwest Newspaper, to whom it was confirmed by the chairman of the works council of the Emden factory, Manfred Wulff. He stated that the carmaker is aware of the very lukewarm attitude of customers towards electric cars, which is probably the source of the aforementioned lower than originally planned demand. At the same time, for example, the ID.4 plant can produce up to 800 per day.

In response, Volkswagen will cancel the shift for the next two weeks and extend the originally three-week vacation for employees producing electric cars by one week. They start in two weeks. About 300 of the 1,500 temporary employees of the factory in northwest Germany will lose their jobs from August. Their contract will not be extended.

A Volkswagen spokesperson when asked by the Nordwest Zeitung, which cites, for example, a trade magazine automobile week, said the automaker believes in increasing plant utilization when the new ID.7 electric sedan hits the market before the end of the year. By the way, due to production shutdowns, there will be the ceremonial start of production has also been postponed ID.7. Automotive News Europe it also reminds that the demand for electric cars in general in Europe fell after, for example, Germany, France or Sweden significantly reduced or completely stopped financial support for their purchase.

In addition to electric cars, models with combustion engines are also produced in Emden, including the Passat Variant. This, however, will not be affected by the cancellation of shifts and the shutdown of production (the German media does not report on the Arteon, another internal combustion VW from Emden), even though it only has the last few weeks ahead of it. By the end of the year, a new generation developed under Škoda Auto, which will be produced in Bratislava, should be shown. Let’s add that in addition to Emden, Volkswagen also makes electric cars in Cvikov, Dresden and Hanover.
