Vitamin B3 helped in the fight against an incurable brain tumor – Russian newspaper

Vitamin B3 (nicotinic acid) helps the immune system fight in glioblastoma, an incurable brain tumor. This conclusion was made by Canadian scientists, having conducted experiments on cell cultures and mice, Science Translational Medicine writes.

Large doses of vitamin D reduced the tumor in the brain of animals and prolonged their life. The experiment showed that the substance activates the immune cells that surround the tumor and were previously “inhibited” by malignant cells. This is especially evident in combination with standard chemotherapy.

So, mice with poor immunity were transplanted with glioblastoma cell lines, which led to the development of tumors. Scientists have tried to treat them with nicotinic acid and temozolomide, which is usually prescribed for glioblastoma. The results were looked at by MRI of the brain and survival of mice in groups of 9-10 individuals.

Separately, the preparations reduced the size of the tumors and increased the life span of the mice. However, their combination worked best. She increased five times the survival compared to the untreated control group. In isolated cases, mice lived as long as healthy ones.

In addition, scientists conducted an experiment on monocytes isolated from the blood of patients with glioblastoma. Typically, such cells had no effect on brain tumor cells, but incubation with vitamin B3 forced them to suppress the growth of tumor cells.
