A pick-up, a rifle and hatred of black people: the sad cliché of the white southern American has become a deadly reality again. The United States mourns the death of a young man who was innocently shot in the middle of the street by a man and his son.
The case that is now shaking America was more than two months ago. But only now is the face of Ahmaud Arbery († 25) known to the whole country. Because his family’s lawyer has released a cell phone video of the last few seconds in Arbery’s life.
The images from February 23 are staggering. They show how Arbery in Brunswick (Georgia) appears to be pursued, posed and finally shot while jogging. Arbery wears sportswear – a white t-shirt and shorts – and walks down a street in the small coastal town in the sunshine. The video is filmed by a witness who is behind Arbery with his vehicle.

And then Arbery meets his killers: a white pick-up truck stands in the middle of the street and blocks the young man’s walk. A man is standing on the loading area, another has left the car. While Arbery tries to avoid the car and keep running, one of the armed men blocks his way – and fires a shot!
Family lawyer: “This is murder”
The release of the video causes deep horror in the United States. In a moving statement, Lee Merritt, lawyer for the dead man’s family, said, “Mr. Arbery had committed no crime and there was no reason for these men to believe that they had the right to stop him with weapons or to use lethal violence. That is murder. Mr. Arbery was hunted and killed for his race solely by three white men, for no reason. ”The third person mentioned could be the video creator.

Merritt also accused the Brunswick police of having held the video back and allowing a “false story about the victim” to portray Arbery as a criminal with mental health problems.
In fact, the two suspects, Gregory McMichael (64) and his son Travis (34), told police report another version of the story: According to Gregory McMichael – a former US cop – the jogger looked like a burglar who had previously been on video cameras was taken in the neighborhood. He then called his son and they both armed themselves. They drove after Arbery in their pick-up and called to him to speak to him. Then they would have stopped.
The police report says the son got out with his gun. The father said that Arbery then attacked the son and that there was a fight for the rifle. The son shot twice.
Trial in jury
The two suspects have not yet been tried. But the terrible case is now being investigated by the GBI Georgias Criminal Police Office after the video appeared. Georgia’s attorney general Chris Carr was “deeply concerned” by the video.
US Senator Kamala Harris – one of only two black senators in the House of Representatives – said the video made her “sick to the core”. She wrote on Twitter: “It shouldn’t be a death sentence to practice black sports.”
Senate Democrat majority leader Chuck Schumer called the incident “heartbreaking and disgusting.” Arbery’s family deserved justice. “There has to be a full, impartial and quick investigation.”
Celebrities such as basketball megastar LeBron James (Los Angeles Lakers) also expressed their sympathy. James wrote on Twitter: “We are literally hunted every day / every time we take a step out of our safe home. You can’t fucking go jogging again. Are you kidding me? I’m sorry, Ahmaud. Peace in paradise. I pray for you in heaven and for your family. “
