The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) attacked on Tuesday against the so-called “sanctuary city” policy of New York, after an undocumented immigrant who had been released allegedly murdered and raped, two weeks later , to an old woman of 92 years.
The federal agency sent a request to the New York Police to keep Reeaz Khan, a 21-year-old immigrant from Guyana accused of the murder and sexual abuse of Maria Fuertes, a Dominican elder, in front of his home.
“The sanctuary city policy of New York continues to threaten the safety of the residents of the five counties as they repeatedly protect foreign criminals who show little respect for the laws of this nation,” Thomas R. Decker, director of the Immigration Detention and Deportation Office (ERO) in New York.
Khan was arrested on November 27 for assault and criminal possession of a weapon, allegedly after he attacked his father and cut him on the chest and on an arm with a ceramic cup.
Decker recalled that the ERO then issued an order for the police to keep Khan under arrest but was released. The authorities issue that order with the purpose of taking custody of the undocumented person for deportation purposes.
The sanctuary city policy prohibits police from cooperating with Immigration authorities unless there is an order from a judge.
Decker also said that by the end of fiscal year 2019, the ERO had deported 267,000 immigrants, arrested 143,000 and that more than 80% of them had served sentences or had pending charges.
On January 6, Fuertes, who was very dear to her neighbors, was assaulted on the back and thrown to the ground in front of her home, in the district of Queens, where she lived 58 years.
The incident was captured by a video camera where the image of Khan was very defined. His brother called the police after identifying him as the subject in the video, according to local media.
