A mother died and her two children are in critical condition after being attacked with a hammer in Brooklyn by a man, according to police reports.
The incident occurred shortly before 2:00 p.m. at 531 52nd Street, in the Sunset Park area.
The mother was 43 years old, and her two children, a four-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy.
The three were taken to Lutheran Hospital and the mother – identified as Zhao Zhao – was later reported dead.
“Just received the tragic news that a mother and her two children were attacked in Sunset Park this afternoon. The mother was killed and the children are in critical condition.
“This is horrible. Please keep the family in your thoughts,” councilor Alexa Avilés wrote in a message on social networks.

Police said the mother, her children and the suspected man lived in separate rooms in a three-bedroom second-floor apartment that is occupied by three different families.
The suspected shooter lives in one room with his 9-year-old son, the mother and her two children in a separate room, and a third person lived alone in the third room, Police Patrol Chief John Chell said.
According to reports, the three victims were attacked with hammers inside the apartment where they live after a dispute between the mother and the suspect, named Ye Liyong.
According to police, the man was arrested by police officers as he was trying to leave the building. He had blood on his body, Chell said.
“I think I can speak for all New Yorkers when I can say: our community, our prayers are with this family at this time,” Chell added.
Police picked up a hammer at the scene and the suspect has been charged with Murder, Attempted Murder (2 counts), Assault (2 counts) and Criminal Possession of a Weapon (2 counts).
