Tomorrow’s Total Lunar Eclipse What Time? Here’s the schedule, location, and explanation

Jakarta

Lunar eclipse is a space phenomenon that always attracts attention. This year, in May 2022, several regions in the hemisphere can witness the phenomenon of a total lunar eclipse.

The National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) which is now the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) explained that the total lunar eclipse will take place on May 15-16, 2022. So what is this phenomenon like?

Here’s a detailed explanation about total lunar eclipse 2022 and the region that can see it

A. Definition and Process of a Total Lunar Eclipse

Quoted from the Space Science Education page, a total lunar eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon when the moon, earth, and sun are in a straight line and the entire surface of the moon falls into the shadow of the earth’s core/umbra.

The process of a lunar eclipse begins with the position of the moon on the opposite side to the side of the earth that experiences daylight. After that, the sun’s rays will travel a longer path than the side of the earth that experiences daylight.

Then, sunlight that reaches the moon will be refracted to a longer wavelength in the visible light spectrum, namely the red spectrum. Total lunar eclipses tend to be reddish in color due to Rayleigh refraction.

This event is the selective refraction of sunlight by the Earth’s atmosphere. A total lunar eclipse can be reddish orange if there is dust and poor air quality at the observation location.

B. Schedule for the 2022 Total Lunar Eclipse

LAPAN has confirmed that the 2022 lunar eclipse event will peak on May 16, 2022. Some parts of the world will experience it on time, but others sooner.

“This eclipse will peak on May 16, 2022 at 04.11.33 UT or 11.11.33 WIB. For several regions in the Americas, the peak of this eclipse will occur on May 15, 2022,” the page said, quoted on Sunday (15/5/2022). ).

This total lunar eclipse cannot be seen directly in Indonesia because the moon is already below the horizon. This 2022 lunar eclipse coincides with Vesak Day 2566 at 11.14.10 WIB / 12.14.10 WITA / 13.14.10 WIT.

C. Locations That Can See a Total Lunar Eclipse

Total lunar eclipse 2022 can be seen in the following areas:

1. Americas

2. Continent of Europe

3. Benua Africa

4. Middle East (except Eastern Iran)

5. New Zealand

6. Most of Oceania.
